Author Matthew Valan provided me with real family photos of his sisters, which were unfortunately quite small and low quality. I applied a watercolor effect in order to increase the size of the photos without becoming pixelated. This also gave the images a dream-like quality, as though picturing them in the author’s memory.
The watercolor drips blend from a sepia tone to red, implying blood splatter—a somber foreshadowing of the tragedies that would befall them.
