Stringing Rosaries

For this project, author Denise Lajimodiere provided historical images of students and photos of chipped paint from a former boarding school in Fort Totten, North Dakota. The texture of the peeling white paint over the natural brick serves as a powerful visual metaphor of colonizers’ efforts to erase the culture of Indigenous Americans, and how over time the horrors of what happened at the schools are being exposed.

The design combines these images with a high-contrast color theme that evokes the harsh reality of generational trauma, as well as hope and healing for survivors and their kin.
