The creative brief for author Paul Legler’s historical fiction novel emphasized the imagery of sandhill cranes, swamps, and railroads. To capture this, I created a painterly illustration of a crane flying low over train tracks, casting an ominous shadow indicative of the dark tone of the book. I decided to let the wings partially obscure the title box to create the illusion of depth.
