This award-winning design, featuring a portrait of author Sammi Jones, was my first illustrated book cover. Researching roller derby culture made a huge impact on the imagery, such as making the title a sticker on her derby helmet as players often personalize their gear. To give the cover a beat-up grittiness without making it look vintage or aged, I used a brush that mimics the appearance of ink rolled on with a brayer and hand-painted scratch marks all over. I combined this with punk inspired fonts and a vibrant color palette, resulting in a high-energy design.
